Machine Design Engineer

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering; other engineering disciplines with applicable work experience may be considered.
  • At least four years of full-time engineering experience designing machinery and equipment; including machinery and equipment in excess of $250,000; preferably for high speed  manufacturing processes.
  • Must be familiar with project leadership and be able to work as both an individual contributor and as a team member and/or team leader, as required.

Job Description

The machine design engineer will primarily manage projects that require the in-house design and fabrication of capital equipment that supports the manufacture of high-volume consumer products.

Essential Functions

  • Manage projects focusing on:
    • Identification of potential improvements to the manufacturing process and the subsequent implementation of the proper solution; including:
      • identification of quantifiable savings
      • project justification
      • ensuring project goals and deliverables are met
    • Design and development of custom built capital equipment; including:
      • development of equipment performance specifications
      • management of the design, fabrication and assembly process with an emphasis on ease of maintenance, operation and setup
      • implementation of the appropriate safety requirements
      • testing, debugging and qualification of assembled equipment
      • facilitate deployment of equipment into production
    • Provide the technical interface between external suppliers, purchasing, product development, manufacturing engineering, sales & marketing, quality and operations.
    • Identify potential risks and ensure all operational impacts are minimized.
    • Ensuring external suppliers are made aware of their roles and responsibilities with regard to safe working procedures.
    • Manage other project engineering duties as assigned.
  • Provide the leadership and motivation required to:
    • Identify potential improvements to the manufacturing process, propose and implement solutions.
    • Design and release new capital equipment in a timely manner.
    • Troubleshoot, modify and/or optimize legacy equipment.
    • Ensure all equipment runs in a safe, efficient manner.
    • Manage project development from initiation to closure.
    • Develop tools and best practices for project management and execution.
    • Lead, coach and motivate project team members on a proactive basis.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and support personnel from multiple disciplines:
    • Purchasing
    • Product Development Engineering
    • Production / Manufacturing / Operations / Safety
    • Quality Assurance
    • Maintenance and machine shop
  • Assist in the development and administration of a multimillion dollar annual capital budget.
    • Preparation and review of capital funding requests.
    • Periodic review of active projects – compared to projected schedule, performance and budget.
  • Provide periodic management summary reports.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Work is performed mostly in office settings. Some outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites or public works facilities. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate drafting instruments, computers and various pieces of office equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and smell.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 45 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are generally Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Short term circumstances may require variance from these hours of work.)

Travel
Moderate travel can be expected for this position. Some travel could be overnight and/or international.

Skill Requirements

Required Competencies

  •  Demonstrated ability to design custom equipment and machinery for high volume consumer products; including:
    •  functional knowledge and ability to select the proper mechanical components; including: bearings, roller chain and belt drives, gearing, clutches and brakes, linear and rotary  actuators, cam and follower systems
    •  functional knowledge of low pressure pneumatic systems; including: air preparation and handling, manual and solenoid valves, cylinder and actuators, and pneumatic logic
    •  functional knowledge of material properties and available treatments for hardening and coating
    •  functional knowledge to properly size actuators and motors
    •  functional knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, servo drives, stepper drives, variable frequency drives, robotics and vision systems
    •  a willingness to adapt to using employer standardized mechanical and electrical components
    •  functional knowledge and proper application of required safety requirements; including:
      •  hard guarding, guard switches, safety relays, light curtains or other safety devices
      •  dual redundant safety circuits
      •  participation in risk assessments to identify and resolve potential hazards
  •  Basic understanding of common machine shop practices, including the ability to effectively communicate with machinists and tool makers.
  •  Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  •  Ability to identify and develop proposals aimed at improving manufacturing operations.
  •  Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Project.
  •  Working knowledge of PC based 3D-CAD systems (preferably Siemens Solid Edge or NX, plus Team Center or similar PLM software).
  •  Understanding of and appreciation for working in cross-functional and multidiscipline environments.
  •  Ability to carry projects from inception thru completion, including ongoing support during the project lifecycle.
  •  A willingness to pursue continuing education and training.

Preferred Competencies

  •  Basic understanding of machine control systems, fluid power systems, automation and productions systems.
  •  Experience in project engineering and/or program management.
  •  Experience in budget development and planning.
  •  Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes such as metal and wire forming, plastics molding and extrusion, assembly and inspection.
